Easy DIY Skin Serum for Radiant Skin

We all want clear, radiant, youthful-looking skin – and this nourishing, all-natural face serum using essential oils will help you get your glow on.

I always had problems with acne as a teen, but it actually got worse after I left school and lasted into my twenties (just what every girl needs when they get their first taste of freedom!).

At the time, it really affected my confidence and there were some days when, quite honestly, I wished I could just put a paper bag over my head.

So when people compliment me on my skin today, I still can’t quite believe they’re talking to me.

Thankfully, those pimply, red-faced days didn’t last forever, but my commitment to caring for my skin did – and I’m passionate about helping women support and love the skin they're in (while gracefully accepting the changes our skin goes through as we age).

Best of all, it doesn’t have to be hard, painful or cost the earth.

As a newly inducted member of the naughty 40s, my approach to skincare has radically changed over the years. Gone are the harsh, oil stripping cleansers, eye-wateringly expensive synthetic moisturizers, and obsessive brand hopping from one “miracle” skincare line to the next.

Instead, I keep it simple. So simple, in fact, that I make my own supercharged anti-aging serum in about 30 seconds flat – and my skin has never felt better.

First rule? Ditch the synthetic chemicals. Our skin is our largest organ and has enough to deal with without us lathering on toxic ingredients. (Side note: If you think your skincare is in the clear, look out for the vague ingredient ‘fragrance’ which gives companies a legal loophole to hide chemicals – many of which are known hormone disruptors, allergens or carcinogens – in the name protecting their “trade secrets”).

Second, use the highest quality plant extracts you can find. Mother nature has everything we need in the form of anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hydrating, regenerative and soothing essential oils. Cleopatra knew it – and if it was good enough for arguably history’s most legendary beauty, it’s good enough for me ;-)

In a small bottle or jar (you can reuse a dōTERRA essential oil bottle and add a dropper lid), add your chosen carrier oil or a combination of carrier oils as your base. For a 15ml bottle, I use:

5ml Organic Rosehip oil
5ml Organic Jojoba oil
5ml dōTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil

Then add the following dōTERRA essential oils:
3 drops Lavender
3 drops Frankincense
2 drops Geranium
2 drops Tea Tree

Note: I choose to use dōTERRA essential oils because of the company’s steadfast commitment to ethically sourcing the most pure and potent oils in the world – your skin’s worth it, ladies!

After I’ve applied my serum, I layer on dōTERRA’s incredible anti-aging blend, Salubelle (also known as Immortelle in the U.S.), to any fine lines, age spots or blemishes.

Salubelle is a combination of Frankincense Resin, Hawaiian Sandalwood, Lavender Flower, Myrrh Gum Resin, Helichrysum Flower, and Rose Flower essential oils to help sustain smoother, more radiant, and youthful-looking skin. So it’s safe to say it’s a must-have for your beauty bag!

TIME SENSITIVE PROMO: Any dōTERRA orders of 200PV or more throughout the month of March will get a FREE Salubelle (retails for $142NZD). That means if you enrol with a Home Essentials Kit, you’ll receive Salubelle as a very special gift. Everyone’s skin is different, so what works well for me may not necessarily work so well for you. Your first choice is the type of carrier oil you use – research online the best carrier oils for your particular skin type and see how they feel.

Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with different essential oils. I’ll sometimes change up the ratios/oils with other skin-supporting options such as Cedarwood, for example. Of course, if you experience any sensitivity or irritation, discontinue use.
