Swap Your Perfume for PURE-fume

Coco Chanel famously said, “A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future”. Well I lost mine when I fell pregnant and stopped using synthetic fragrances. But when my son turned a year old, I thought it was time I snatched it back with a super cute bottle of botanical perfume.

As my husband and I got ready to leave for a Christmas party, I gave a quick spritz of my new fragrance and looked forward to the feelings of femininity and confidence it promised me.

But what I got was a headache. And a queasy feeling in my stomach, made worse by the fact that I’d just wasted a hundred bucks on something I’d probably never wear again (not the first time that had happened). It seemed my tolerance for even the most mild perfumes had gone out the window – along with my future according to Coco. Or had it?

What’s really in your perfume?

Sadly, that expensive bottle of designer fragrance taking pride of place in your bathroom cabinet is likely to contain a cocktail of endocrine-disrupting chemicals that don’t exactly equate to happy hour for your hormones.

In fact, if you look through the long list of ingredients in your sweet smelling perfumes and moisturisers, you’ll likely see the word “fragrance”. This vague ingredient category (companies aren’t required to disclose chemicals used in fragrance), commonly contains phthalates, a class of chemicals linked to a host of health risks.

A safe, natural, pure alternative

100% pure essential oils make the most beautiful “pure-fumes”. Not only are nature’s scents safe, they can support your physical and emotional health while you wear them.

Not all essential oils are created equal, so choose a quality brand you can trust. What I love about dōTERRA essential oils is that they're sourced from all over the world where each plant grows best naturally. This not only makes for more potent and powerful oils, but it supports local farmers and communities, many of whom are located in developing nations.

My top 3 dōTERRA blends for pure-fumes

1. Whisper
This is the essential oil blend for women made from some of nature’s most precious plant extracts including Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Bergamot, Vetiver, and Hawaiian Sandalwood.

I’d seen so many women raving about this little beauty online that I couldn’t wait to try it and it was the first oil I added to my Loyalty Rewards Programme (LRP) order. What’s cool about Whisper is that it combines with your own individual chemistry to create a unique and personal fragrance you’re guaranteed to love.

2. Balance
This grounding blend is fast becoming a favourite of mind for its warm, woody, calming aroma. Not only does it evoke a sense of tranquility and relaxation, but it can ease feelings of anxiety – perfect for when you’re just having one of those days.

Balance combines Spruce Needle/Leaf, Ho Wood, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower, and Blue Chamomile Flower essential oils in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil. It can be applied directly to the skin or further diluted to reduce skin sensitivity.

3. Citrus Bliss
Now, before you get yourself a bottle of Citrus Bliss, I must warn you – there are many an essential oil user claiming to be addicted to using Citrus Bliss in their diffuser because it’s So. Damn. Divine.

This is our invigorating blend made up of Wild Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Bergamot, Tangerine, and Clementine essential oils with a hint of Vanilla Absolute. A couple of dabs of this sweet, citrus scent and you’ll feel like you’re walking on sunshine.
