5 Natural Remedies to Support Your Winter Wellness

Winter is upon us – and so are the bugs and seasonal sniffles that come with it. Natural remedies are a safe way to support your health, so you get to enjoy more time jumping in puddles and less time feeling miserable under the duvet.

I like to think of natural health remedies as our first line of defense against environmental threats – and with my toddler starting daycare recently, extra support for our family’s immune systems became a big priority this year.

So I did my research and invested in a selection of high quality essential oils. These pure plant extracts are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs and can penetrate the cell membrane to eliminate threats... just the way nature intended.

Below are my top five dōTERRA essential oils to support your wellness this winter. But, before we go on, it's important to note that essential oils do not replace traditional medication. Always seek the advice of a qualified professional when needed.

Ok, here we go:

1. OnGuard

Forget blueberries – cloves have one of the highest antioxidant contents of any food, and it just so happens that clove bud essential oil is a key ingredient in this protective blend (along with wild orange, eucalyptus and rosemary oils). Side note: Antioxidant power is measured in ORAC values with everyone’s favourite superfood, regular blueberries, coming in at 4700, and good old ground cloves coming in at a whopping 290,000!

OnGuard is a regular in my diffuser (often paired with Frankincense, Lemon or Oregano) to protect against airborne threats and fill my home with a deliciously warm, spicy aroma perfect for winter. I also use it as a throat gargle, to disinfect our toothbrushes, as an on-the-go natural hand sanitizer (diluted with fractionated coconut oil), to clean my floors, and even as a perfume (can you imagine using a traditional household cleaner for that!).

2. EasyAir

This respiratory blend is my go-to for the change of seasons or when anyone in my home needs sinus or lung support. It’s a blend of Laurel, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara Leaf essential oils and produces a minty fresh aroma that helps maintain feelings of clear airways and easy breathing.

I have roller bottles with EasyAir and fractionated coconut oil (adult and child dilutions) on hand to apply to our chests, backs and soles of feet when needed. I also adore this oil in our diffuser, especially overnight (dōTERRA’s Petal Diffuser has a one, two and four hour timer). If you don’t have a diffuser, you can still also use it aromatically by placing a few drops in your hands, rubbing together and inhaling deeply, or in a bowl of boiling water/on the floor of your shower for a quick and easy steam inhalation.

3. Oregano

Described as “nature’s antibiotic”, the value of Oregano extends well beyond your bolognese sauce. It’s been used throughout history for its cleansing and immune-boosting properties and is one hot, potent oil (always use with care, especially around the kiddos).

I like to pair Oregano with OnGuard in our diffuser for a powerful immune-boosting punch (only one or two drops are needed). My husband and I also use it as a throat gargle, and it’s always on hand when we’re cooking our fave Italian dishes (just go one drop at a time– trust me!).

4. Lemon

Where would we be in winter without a soothing lemon, honey and ginger tea? A single drop of lemon essential oil is all you need to naturally cleanse the body and aid digestion – perfect for hot drinks or your glass of water first thing in the morning.

Lemon is such a versatile oil. I use it in place of lemon zest in recipes, as a surface cleaner, to freshen up the washing, or in the diffuser (it pairs beautifully with peppermint for a fresh morning pick-me-up). It takes 45 organic lemons to make a 15ml bottle of dōTERRA lemon oil, so at $13.50 AUD per bottle (when you set up a wholesale account), it’s fantastic bang for your buck.

5. Frankincense

Ahhh Frankincense… the “King of Oils”. Your soon-to-be best friend, Frankie, has been revered throughout the ages for his health benefits and has inspired the saying, “When in doubt, use Frankincense”. He's good for nourishing the blood and brain, and supports healthy cells (check out www.pubmed.gov for more research into the health benefits).

I use Frankincense in our diffuser (he blends beautifully with any oil), on my skin to reduce the appearance of imperfections, diluted with a carrier oil for an all-over aromatic dressing, or as a perfume. He's also one of the main oils in a blend I make for my husband to sooth his cracked, dry hands (he’s a builder and they get worse over the cooler months).

There you have it – five beautiful essential oils to support you and your family’s health this winter. Enjoy!

P.S. These five oils – plus five more AND a diffuser – are included in dōTERRA’s Home Essentials Kit (this is the enrollment kit I started with and is well worth the investment in my opinion).
